February 2010 Newsletter

A busy time already for Atkinson as we have attended many music educator conventions and numerous regional Horn workshops. This week we will bring all model Horns, mouthpieces and parts to you at CBDA (Feb. 18-21) in Fresno, CA. Partial profit from the show will be donated to Haitian Relief to help the people in Haiti.

The Erfurt Kruspe Horns offer two bell sizes and the Geyer models offers three bell sizes in three alloys. For those Kruspe players who wish they could play a Geyer we suggest our European size bell which is a darker color and is more robust in sound. We brought several of these newer Geyer-European belled horns to the last IHS symposium in Macomb, ILL. and they were received with great enthusiasm. Our Geyer Horns in XL size bell are also offered and play extremely well particularly in Nickel Silver. A variety of accessories can be added to you Atkinson Horn to make life even more pleasant. As always we continue to offer the traditional Geyer style bell favored by many.

MOUTHPIECES:

We have finished several hundreds of mouthpieces in all Atkinson cups, rims and bore sizes with either silver or gold finish. Shanks offered are standard new diameters or classic older diameter which is slightly smaller. Call for details.

NEW MODEL COMING UP:

We are nearing completion of our new AK2010 model Kruspe Horn with uni-body valve section with tapered rotors. This will be our first model horn using CAD/CAM computer assisted machining with 5 dimensional axis equipment all done in house in our Burbank facility. This horn will feature 6 fewer joints in an effort to make the air flow smoother with less turbulence. Also featured will be a one-piece hand hammered bell and original Kruspe 5th and 6th branches modified to give you the best of Kruspe bends in the world. We expect great things with this horn and have invested heavily in its development. Stay tuned for updates.

The Fairies Kiss :

Valve Job, We are famous for valve plating and still continue to offer the best valve work available. Recently we were honored with the valve restoration on Jim Deckers beloved Alexander 103 which was in much need of valve work. Indeed we made another very satisfied customer. Special thanks for Jim´s support. After many coats of copper and a wear coat of nickel this horn was completed. For those of you who do not know Mr. Decker was professor of Horn at USC for many decades as well as a distinguished career in both studio and orchestra. Jim played first Horn on the beloved recording of The Fairies Kiss with the Columbia Symphony under the baton of no other than Igor Stravinsky. He and his son Doug are the inventors of the Ivasi System an unique interactive video audition system. For more info on this great learning tool please visit
